The Classroom as Media Center

When people used to think of classrooms, they would typically think of a teacher talking to their students abou this or that topic.  However, in this day and age, it has become more and more common for classrooms to feature more and more technology, to the point where it is completely ubiquitous to see students with more technology in their bags and pockets than used to be on the space shuttle.  Technology has simply progressed to a point where there is a whole lot of it, and a lot more people can afford to have it for themselves.  This is to be expected.  However, it has advantages.

For one thing, it is now easier than ever before for teachers to administer assignments, quizzes, tests and general information to thier students through the Internet.  Where at one point it would have been necessary to call all of their students and inform them of whatever it was, now it can either be texted or emailed to them all within a few minutes.  This is an unbelievably efficient means of transmitting information, and since most students carry around portable media devices, it is extremely easy for them to receive these messages in short order.

Once students get into the classroom, they do not necessarily have to ask as many questions of their teacher or take as dutiful notes as their predecessors had to take.  After all, any word that they want to have defined can be searched for within a matter of seconds, and the notes of many class periods are often available online in some form or other.  The classroom has turned into a media center full of great, easily accessed information, if they will use it.
