Learning with Technology

By now most people are aware that technology is helping teachers in the classroom. The advances in technology, especially digital media, are making it much easier for teachers to share information with their students. Where once a teacher was limited by a textbook and a chalkboard, a whole new world has been opened up with technology.

Another aspect of technology in the classroom is learning with technology. Of course the teacher benefits from teaching with technology, but the students also benefit. In fact, many students are thriving in a digital classroom. Those students that may have been left behind before are now able to keep up with their class and discover new concepts. Today, we can see students converting their ideas and thoughts into useful strategies and concepts using programs like Freemind. Also students are undoubtedly dependent on software like Open Office and GIMP for word processing, spreadsheets and graphics tasks.

Computers and learning programs are a great aid in the classroom and in learning. With computers, students are able to play a learning game over and over multiple times until they grasp the concept. For those students who catch on quickly, they can go on to another concept. For the student who is struggling, he can keep trying until he gets it right. This helps the student who is struggling to learn the new concept, but it also saves embarrassment because he never has to let his classmates know that he struggled with the concept. Everyone learns at their own pace.

It makes sense that computers help students to learn better. Many students nowadays are used to playing computer games for fun. They know how a computer works and how to find their way through certain programs. We can see students learning and using complex accounting programs like GNU Cash confidently using software manuals and online community guidance. To enable students to get acquainted with technology we only need to put them in a familiar and technical environment and they are sure to thrive and grow. Learning on a computer seems natural to a student, since it is an environment he is familiar with.

Modern technology is certainly changing classrooms for the better. We can expect to see more advancements in the classroom in coming years.
