For many years, teachers struggled to teach computer technology because not every home was equipped with a computer on which students could practice what they learned. It is very hard to retain information if a hands-on method is not taken with children, especially if a subject is foreign. Now, most families have a computer in their homes, or can access the Internet by going to a local library, so it is not as much of an issue.
Furthermore, many elementary school classrooms have been given grants in order to set up entire classrooms based around technology. This is done in a couple of different ways. Some classrooms buy laptops for each child that can be taken to and from home for homework as well as be used in the classroom. Other classrooms buy computers for students to have on their desks. This is done in an effort to teach children how to use technology for learning and prepare them for a now technologically focused world.
Some parents worry that having the Internet available to young elementary students is a bad idea, but the school systems have implemented a strict content blocker on all computers so that kids have a lot harder time getting in trouble. The system seems to have prevented many viruses as well.
Technology in the classroom has helped teachers get a lot more work done, too, because they can set up tests and assignments online that can be automatically graded, which saves a lot of time doing correcting. Plus, teachers can set up websites and online portals for students to access assignments even when they are at home sick because all they need is an Internet connection.
If you want your child to take part in a technology classroom, contact your local school district to see what is available and learn how to apply. Often, all you need to do is ask and the school will accommodate your wishes.
