Over a hundred years ago going to college was very different than it is today. Mostly men went to these schools, most of the professors were men, and most classes were taught with lecture only. For students today, lectures are not fun, not exciting, not a good learning tool. These students text during class, sleep, and even disrupt the whole class together by talking and giggling. What is a poor professor to do? Why how about changing how they lecture today’s modern student.
For starters, teachers can let the students talk more about the material during class time. They can begin doing this by having more hands on activities with their students. Having more time to provide more material and subject matter can also help those instructors who teach gmat prep, act, and other college entrance exam. Students only have the advantage of these course for a few hours and then the test date comes. The more material could benefit students test scores. Students like to talk to each other in class so the teacher should use this to the learning lecture’s advantage. For example, teacher can assign certain areas for groups of students to discuss and share with the class. That way everyone participates and helps in the learning process. What better way could there be than to engage students through talking and listening to their ideas about the class?
Many teachers need to incorporate technology in the classroom. This could mean showing videos, or making PowerPoint presentations that enhance the lecture. Students want to see something visual when teachers are speaking, and it helps students take better notes. When students take better notes, then they ask better questions which leads to more learning taking place in the classroom. Technology in the classrooms can help make lectures more interesting and fun for everyone. Teachers must understand that simply lecturing is not enough that they must change the teaching style as students’ needs change.
